One of the things I love most about choosing wool is the name. I often wonder who has the lovely job of choosing which name for what colour and where they garner their inspiration from. I'm always sad for wools that are un-named, just a dyelot number, like they're unloved somehow. These woollen colours are for the growing babe. Zahra was gifted a beautifully lush receiving blanket from her Meme seven years ago, which was knitted by some very talented CWA women. Oh, the things I could learn sitting by these women as they knit. I thought this babe would need something to snuggle in too and have decided to knit a simple birth blanket. Simple being the operative word as lacework and complex patterns frighten me a little. After a quick search I finally set my sights on the Super Easy Baby Blanket from Purl Bee (if you pop over there check out their gorgeous Whit Knit Christmas ideas). I've added a seed stitch border and settled on five colours in wider stripes rather than the pattern's thinner seven colour stripe theme. All the colours are Jo Sharp's silk tweeds, except for woodland and perfect day, which are baby alpaca. The woodland I have other plans for. This past week I've been adoring Alicia Paulson's little Amelia and all the wee knitted creations Alicia has made for her. It makes this Mama want to knit, knit, knit little things. I've been getting the occassional odd glance, on those warmer days when down at the pool I sit and knit while Zah swims.
All the roses in our garden are blooming at the moment, pale pink tea roses, deep red Mr Lincoln's, icy whites and my favourite, the old fashioned roses in a gentle yellow. Zahra and I have a Monday morning ritual of going down into the garden first thing to pick fresh flowers for the week. Some for her bedroom, a vase for the bathroom, the dining table and the entrance dresser. The other morning while eating our porridge and admiring that morning's flower harvest we decided to give each one a name. Zahra came up with Pink Tea, Yellow delight, Love and Golden Song for the lush yellows. The colours of Spring she calls them.
